in anticipation of World Oceans Day 2011 and the 2012 Rio Conference
The younger generation, watchful observers with a contribution to make
From Rio 1992 to Rio 2012 and a new generation is coming of age. This generation is keen to articulate its vision of sustainable development, to explain its expectations and formulate its ideas for the conservation of marine resources. This is why the World Ocean Network and the Global Forum have decided to help young people to convey their message to decision-makers and other stakeholders at the Rio Conference.
We want to encourage young people, between the ages of 12 and 25, to familiarise themselves with the aims of the Rio Conference, and then, in response to the situation today, to formulate their proposals for a sound stewardship of the Ocean’s resources.
Contributing to RIO 2012
We want to encourage young people to give their analysis of the question of the Ocean and sustainable development. They may express their hopes and indignation, but we would like them, in particular, to formulate proposals, in other words, imagine the concrete actions needed to ensure that their future is a sustainable one, both locally and globally.
Who can participate?
This campaign action is open to young people aged between 12 and 25, from all social backgrounds and from all over the world. School classes, a youth club, groups of students or just groups of friends, all are welcome to take part. Joining the campaign is easy; a group must just register its participation with the World Ocean Network.
Educators, teachers and staff from NGOs, charities and so on can help with organisational aspects as well as with the articulation of ideas.
The form of the proposals put forward by participating groups will be harmonised so they can be disseminated to a wide audience.
Action and dissemination
Participating groups are invited to produce two types of document:
- slogans with messages for the preservation of the Ocean;
- a short written text with observations and proposals
- and drafted in a constructive style so they stimulate debate and action.
A text, presenting the main proposals made by participating groups, will be drafted. This Call will be communicated at a number of international gatherings:
- the Global Oceans Conference organised by the Global Forum, 20th to 24th February, 2012;
- the Rio Conference, 4th to 6th June, 2012;
- the International Aquarium Congress, 9th to 14th September, 2012.
