The Ocean Project
The Ocean Project helps each year to coordinate events and activities worldwide with aquariums, zoos, museums, conservation organizations, schools, businesses. Together with the World Ocean Network, The Ocean Project is also working to have the United Nations officially designate World Ocean Day as 8 June each year.

Greenpeace

Greenpeace « Defending our oceans » launches a new web campaign (see pages http://oceans.greenpeace.org/en/ocean-defenders/world-ocean-day-2006 ) starting on 8 June and lasting during the whole World Cup. They also propose to people to express their concern for the world oceans on the online art4oceans gallery (please see http://oceans.greenpeace.org/en/fun-stuff/art4oceans ).

Throughout the country LONGITUDE 181 and its creator François SARANO , in partnership with the FFESSM, the French Federation of Underwater Studies and Sports, and the MER-TERRE organisation will be running the campaign, “Let's act together against pollution at sea” from 4 June onwards in the middle of the environment week and in conjunction with the 8 June festivities for the World Ocean Day. The aim is to encourage divers and diving centres to share their observations of land-based sea bed pollution. A March for the Ocean will be organized between Tevragh Zeina and the great crossroads.

Association Planète Bleue et Développement Durable

Specialists and witnesses will help us to understand some themes such as biodiversity, marine and land pollutions, ocean resources and climatic changes. Participants will help to clean beaches from Lomé to Aného (every day from 6 h to 9 h) and assist in creating an action plan for the information and education of the general public. On 5 June, a "Marathon of the Ocean" should gather over 8,000 competitors in Lomé. A picture gallery will be organised on the 8th June 2006 from 2 h to 5 h p.m. Distribution of the Passeport of Citizen of the Ocean. Signing of the Declaration of Support for the UN to officially declare 8 June as the World Ocean Day.

The LA ROCHELLE AQU ARI UM and its partner E.C.O.L.E DE LA MER are launching a major competition: the best slogan to protect the Ocean! The winner(s) will be rewarded on 8 June whilst information for all will be provided on “The Feeding Sea” through games, conferences and other events. The team of biologists is setting up a series of animations to heighten public awareness of the protection of the oceans. Moreover, among the 32 classes from the Manche Département (France) which realised an eco-citizen project or took part to a “water class”, 2 will be awarded on 8 June. Elected by several Sea professionals (biologists, teachers, specialists…), the projects will be presented during the Festival of Children's and Comic Books which theme is “Air, Water…and Books ! Heal your Planet”. Each pupil will get his Passport of the Citizen of the Ocean and will discover this Festival and the exhibition “Chasing marine monsters, an adventure of Indiana Kraken”.

The DESTINATION PLANETE MER organisation will set a course for the Ile des Embiez as part of the WOD celebrations. We will have to wait until 25 June to set sail on the training sailing ship to take part in events about eco-gestures on board and to sign the charter. If you don't have your sea legs, the wharf will feature plankton and crustaceans at the PELAGOS sanctuary along with a photograph exhibition organised by the charity. The SNSM and its dogs will be meeting Citizens of the Ocean to issue them with passports set against music and singing.

The OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTE, home to the CENTRE DE LA MER ET DES EAUX (bookings: +33(0)1 44 32 10 95), will celebrate Ocean day on 7 June: from 10 a .m. to 12.30 and from 1.30 p.m. till 8 will be teaching workshops entitled “the apocalypse from the sea” for children aged 8 to 12 along with “macro-waste” with the teaching team at the Centre de la mer for children aged six up. Adults are also invited to join the conference on “ Macro-waste: challenges and outlook” with the Mer-Terre organisation from 7.30 to 9.30 p.m. Other features include the Garef Océanographique and the Interloque association. Needless to say, Citizen of the Ocean passports will be available to all – children and adults – along with information on actions by the World Ocean Network and how to become a “Citizen of the Ocean” . Admission is free with reception in the main hall of the Institute.

NAUSICAÄ - Centre National de la Mer
NAUSICAA will coordinate festivities relating to the World Ocean Day starting Thursday 8 June with twenty-odd partners along the Côte d'Opale. The Festival de la Plage will take place on 8-11 June in Boulogne-sur-Mer and will include scientific events (observation of marine biodiversity, rambles with commentary, guided tours, etc.) along with artistic and cultural events (tall ships, tours of the brand new waste water station, etc.). Another noteworthy event as part of the new “Steer South” exhibition in NAUSICAA is the first ever cooperation program between schoolchildren from around Boulogne and those in African coastal countries in the expedition described in the exhibition and on the theme of waste management: “ From hilltops to the ocean, everything goes to the sea ”. In Le Croisic, OCEARI UM will be hosting the LIGUE CONTRE LE CANCER on 8 June for their conference on using marine-based produce in the fight against cancer, by Professor Khaled MEFLAH, Coordinator of the Cancéropole Grand Ouest and Director of Nantes INSERM's 601 Unit. Cherbourg – Val de Saire, People of the Wind celebrate the World Ocean Day ! ! For an unforgettable day all around the North of Cotentin. People of the Wind, its institutional and associative partners are setting up a series of events to raise public awareness on the protection of the Oceans. School trips are planned to explore the historic and scientific nature of the tip of Gatteville lighthouse and a visit of an oyster-farming centre for a better understanding of the link between Man and the Sea. More than 450 children from Val De Saire schools are expected to take part and receive their Passports to become Citizens of the Ocean. Many water classes will present their activities and creations in support of the preservation of the ocean for 2006. Sea professionals, educationalists and association representatives will elect 2 Ambassadors of the North Cotentin Ocean. The climax of this event will be a drawing and picture created by the children on a free theme linked with the Ocean.

In Moorea, the TE MANA O TE MOANA association will propose, with the support of the MOOREA DOLPHIN CENTER and the HOTEL INTERCONTINENTAL Moorea, activities on the discovery, management and conservation of the marine enviroment.

  • Informing the public: conference about the Plan for the Management of Marine Areas in Moorea by a Fisheries Department representative; information booth ( cetaceans, turtles, corals, pollution due to waste, marine environment protection, etc.); information boards from the Island Research Centre and Environmental Observatory of Moorea about coral reefs; exhibition entitled “Sustainable Development: what for?” (teaching aids with 21 posters by Yann ARTHUS-BERTRAND about sustainable development for every French school); showing of “La mer est pour tous”/ ”Sentinelles de la nature” DVDs and videos, this Ushuaia TV program was shot in French Polynesia.
  • Art activities: Exhibition of a mural (texts, drawings, pictures) made by the Papetoai outdoor centre children within the scope of a twinning with a school in Banyuls (this twinning was organized between the Moorea submarine trail and the Banyuls nature reserve submarine trail); exhibition of the award-winning works of the “environment” contests organized by the Moorea town hall ; making of a mural about marine environment by visitors (children and adults).
  • Passport of Citizen of the Ocean: o fficial creation of the Embassy of the Ocean hosted by TE MANA O TE MOANA for the Western Pacific Ocean area (within the World Ocean Network); official launching of the Passports of the Citizen of the Ocean (and passports given to visitors, children and adults).
  • Trips at sea: release of a turtle (that recovered after staying in the Moorea turtles' healthcare centre) attended by the Mayor of Moorea.
